Welcome to the Executive Office of the Board of Supervisors

The charge of the Executive Office of the Board of Supervisors is to perform ministerial functions for the Board of Supervisors. Additionally, the Executive Officer provides administrative and staff support to various County departments and commissions.

Until 1959, State law provided that the county clerk was ex officio clerk of the board of supervisors in each county. However, in that year legislation was enacted that allowed a county board of supervisors to establish, by ordinance, a clerk of the board of supervisors to be appointed by the board in the same manner as other county officers are appointed.

On October 20, 1959, the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles adopted an ordinance creating a Department of the Board of Supervisors and establishing the position of Clerk of the Board of Supervisors as its administrative head. In 1968, the Board amended the Salary Ordinance to change the title of Clerk of the Board to Executive Officer, Board of Supervisors. Since July 1, 1968, four Executive Officers have served the Board.
