Assessment Appeals General Information
Assessment Appeals Boards
The property taxes you pay are primarily based on your property's
assessed value as determined by the County Assessor. If you disagree
with value established by the Assessor, you can appeal that value
to the Assessment Appeals Boards.
The Assessment Appeals Boards and individual Assessment Hearing
Officers conduct hearings on these property assessment disputes.
Acting on behalf of the Board of Supervisors, in a judicial capacity,
and acting on the basis of relevant evidence submitted at the
hearing, it is their role to make a fair, impartial decision on
all property assessment disputes appealed, between taxpayers and
the Assessor. The Assessment Appeals Boards are separate and independent
from the Assessor's Office.
Assessment Appeals Division
The Assessment Appeals Division provides staff support to the
County's five Assessment Appeals Boards and more than 20 Assessment
Hearing Officers. The division is responsible for all administrative
and clerical activities associated with the proper handling of
the assessment appeals application. The staff conducts extensive
research to verify information on each application form to validate
appeals before a hearing is scheduled at the Kenneth Hahn Hall
of Administration or an outlying facility. The staff is available
to explain the Assessment Appeals process to taxpayers and can
provide useful publications that may be helpful in preparing for
a hearing. This type of assistance is provided to taxpayers ranging
from homeowners and small business owners to multi-billion dollar
corporations. The staff also prepares and sends notices of the
Board's decisions and provides additional information or explanations
taxpayers may require.
